Things To Do In Brampton, Ontario This Month, If You Like Comics – True Patriot, Workshops, and Brampton Batman

TruePatriotInviteKevin Hickey writes,

Brampton, Ontario is just a short drive from Canada's largest city Toronto, and is quickly establishing itself as a hotbed for comic book culture. The latest examples of the ongoing nerdification of the city include the True Patriot Exhibit at the world-class Peel Art Gallery, Museum + Archives (PAMA), and the nightly appearances Brampton's very own Caped Crusader.

True Patriot was a successfully crowd-sourced graphic novel previously featured on this site and is an anthology of new Canadian superheroes created by award-winning Canadian comic creators.

The world of high art will stand up and take notice of the artistic value of comic books with PAMA's exhibit True Patriot: The Next Generation of Canadian Superheroes, running from January 12th to March 30, 2014. The creators being featured include Tom Fowler, J. Bone, Scott Chantler, Agnes Garbowska, Adam Gorham, Jay Stephens, J. Torres and more. There is a gallery opening reception on Sunday January 19th from 2-4pm and you can learn more by visiting here.

Workshops scheduled at PAMA during the True Patriot exhibit are as follows:

  • Saturday January 25th 1-3pm: Self Publishing Workshop featuring local creators Ricky Lima, Sanya Anwar, David Bishop, and Jason Loo.
  • Saturday February 1st 1-3pm: Breaking into Comics and Portfolio Review with J. Torres
  • Saturday March 1st 1-3pm: How to Draw workshop with Scott Chantler
  • Saturday March 8th 1-3pm: Writing for Comics with Ricky Lima

And after visiting the exhibit at PAMA, why not stick around for the chance to meet Brampton's Dark Knight, aka Brampton Batman? First revealed to the world back in June 2013, Brampton's Dark Knight has used his nightly patrols and sightings in the city, coupled with his exposure on national news programs and in newspapers to become somewhat of a celebrity.

While he may look menacing, the Dark Knight is more than willing to pose for photographs with the people he meets on his patrols. He also gets along fabulously with the police, attends charity functions, and loves to see smiles on people's faces. Does it get more "Canadian" than that?
