Bad For You Is Good For You – Exposing The War On Fun

-1Greetings from the authors of Bad For You: Exposing the War on Fun, Kevin C. Pyle and Scott Cunningham. We don't have a Kickstarter project, just a book we've created. A book that the School Library Journal called "mind-boggling, entertaining, and completely educational." We especially like their exhortation to "Make sure every teen gets a copy." We're happy that book-loving librarians like us, because we like books – and not just comic books. We're both from a generation for whom "browsing" meant hovering around the aisles of a local bookstore, sneak-reading for hours a day. And we did a lot of hovering back then.

We're also from the generation that, for better or for worse, enjoyed the freedom of vacant lots, "dangerous" hobbies and unstructured time. So when we read about comic book burnings, skateboard laws, city curfews, absurd suspensions, and other moments of societal hysteria, we were inspired to do something about it. What we did is Bad For You — a history of kids…for kids. It's a nonfiction, graphic novel that details all the terrible stuff out there that's bad for kids and dares to ask the question: is it?

That's because Bad For You is also an investigation that looks at the studies behind the fears and the realities behind the headlines, and presents the evidence in eye-grabbing graphics. And even though we started out making it for kids, adults like it too. In fact, Barnes and Noble has stuck it on display in their Humor section. Who knew the War on Fun would be so funny!

But a warning. Bad For You isn't for everyone. If you are one of the helicopter parents fearfully watching over everything your kid is doing, then don't buy Bad For You. If you're a principal who suspends 10-year-olds from school for aiming a gun-shaped piece of chicken at someone, then don't buy Bad For You. If you're a researcher who thinks this generation of young people are the biggest narcissists in history, then don't buy Bad For You. Any ministers planning a church-sponsored bonfire of Harry Potter and Twilight books, then don't buy Bad For You. Actually, the ministers should buy a copy. Then burn it.
