Latest Supergirl Promo Adds Confusion To Origin Story

In this new promo spot for Supergirl, we get our first look at Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, mother of Kara Zor-El played by Melissa Benoist. The trailer focuses on Kara's decision to stay in the shadows for over two decades and her struggling to become a hero like her cousin.

In the clip they say she has been blending in for 24 years… which is a bit confusing with the comic origin of the character. In the comics Kara comes to Earth as a teenager with the idea that she will protect her cousin Kal-El. But she stays in cryo-sleep for much longer and when she comes out, still a teenager, Kal is an adult. But if in the TV series she has been "blending in" for 24 years then either she is far older than her mid-twenties which the actress is… or she came to Earth as a baby and was raised by a family just like Kal. But they're playing Superman in this like he's been out there and established for a while. And if you look at the beginning of the promo shot she is definitely not an infant in the spaceship.

Whatever the answer is, it appears we are getting a modified origin for her.

Supergirl debuts on CBS October 26th.
