A PlayStation 4.5 With More Power Is Apparently In Development

Playstation 4 Retro

Consoles have an inherent problem that comes with a long cycle life. Technology moves so fast, that by the time a console is put to pasture, the technology in it might as well be stone-aged. Microsoft have recently talked openly about the notion of being able to beef up the power in their console in the future, but this new report says Sony might actually move first.

Kotaku, who have a great track record, are reporting that several of their sources are saying that a 'PlayStation 4.5' of sorts is in development. Essentially, this means that this console would have better graphical capabilities, possibly even running games up to 4k. It's noted that it's not clear that if this will be a direct upgrade or if this will be an entirely new console you'd have to buy.

Weirdly, from the New 3DS, the noise Xbox have been making and now this, I am beginning to wonder if consoles with changing specs might end up being a real thing in the future. It seems a dangerous proposition, potentially fracturing audiences, but perhaps with tech moving increasingly fast this is the only way to keep consoles relevant to an emerging PC market. We will have to see how this plays out.
