All-New Wolverine #22 Review: The Guardians Were In The Neighborhood

In All-New Wolverine #22, with the deadly virus brought by the alien pod contained, Laura has barely managed to recover. She wakes up to Captain Marvel, Deadpool, and her partner and sister-clone Gabby, waiting for her.

She soon learns that Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. has discovered the origin point of the alien pod. Fury saddles her up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and she, Gabby, and Jonathan the wolverine join the team for a trip into uncharted space.

On the planet, they find an impenetrable shield and an invading force that forces the group into a fight for their lives.

This was a fairly entertaining read. Laura Kinney has risen to be one of Marvel's coolest superhero offerings, and this comic shows why. She's determined, less bitter than her predecessor, and actually has a slight sense of humor.

This next stage of her adventure is a bit charming in its shameless ridiculousness. Laura needs to go to space, and the Guardians happen to be in the neighborhood. Boom! Team-up.

The identity of the aliens on the planet will be a treat for any X-Men fan, but the speed at which this comic goes from light-hearted fun to dark conflict is a bit jarring. The tonal shift is really fast, and it's understandable that some people may not be able to keep up with that. It certainly threw me off.

Things do happen really quickly in this comic. While that does allow for a lot of plot to transpire, it also results in a comic that can't stay in one place too long.

Leonard Kirk's art has been fairly good throughout this series, and this issue is no exception. He's good at depicting expressions, but his figures tend to be a bit scrawny and warped at times. However, he's great at drawing Laura herself, and she always looks like badass.

The color art is pleasingly bright in itself. The colors contrast well, and they bolster Kirk's artwork.

Despite its flaws, All-New Wolverine #22 is a good read. Laura is a great protagonist, Gabby is a good support character, and this is a fun adventure comic that is more interested in getting you to have fun than spending too long explaining itself. It definitely a recommended comic.
