Wonder Woman Passes Spider-Man To Be The Highest Grossing Superhero Origin

Wonder Woman broke a lot of records but it looks like it just broke another one. According to Forbes Wonder Woman has passed 2002's Spider-Man in box office and has become the highest grossing superhero origin film.

Wonder Woman Passes Spider-Man To Be The Highest Grossing Superhero Origin

It appeared for a while that Wonder Woman was on course to snag the #1 spot on the all-time superhero origin list, but in the final few weeks it became less clear whether or not the film had enough momentum left — and enough potential uncounted receipts from some markets — to surpass Spider-Man's longstanding $821.7. I became skeptical that there was still enough money on the table to help lift Jenkins' film over the final hurdle, as I noted in previous articles on the subject, but let this be a lesson not to underestimate the power and battlefield stamina of an Amazon.

Even if Wonder Woman hadn't passed this milestone that wouldn't diminish the effect this movie has had. Warner Bros is going to push Wonder Woman as an Oscar contender and not just in the technical awards where movies like this usually get to hang out. This movie proved that there is an audience for female focused stories and paved the way for female directors to take on big blockbuster franchises. People think Justice League has a chance because this movie restored faith in the DC Extended Universe after three duds. None of that would have gone away if Wonder Woman stayed in the number two spot.

She didn't though, she's number one, and first place is always better than second.

Summary: Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, David Thewlis, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. It's available on VOD and Blu-ray now.
