Watch the Original Opening to Coco

Coco was one of the best Pixar movies to come along in a long time. It struck an emotional chord and left audiences weeping like babies. The message was clear: this is all about confronting your family and your past. That's one of the reasons the opening is so good. It's Miguel telling the story of his family and why they hate music. It lets the audience know that this is a personal story. Now, with the film's home release, it's been revealed that the original opening was a musical number explaining Día de Muertos for someone who might not understand it. The movie comes out on home release on February 27th, but USA Today released that opening number for all to see.

The song is fine, and judging by the concept designs, the scene would have been great, too — but the opening works so much better telling the story of Miguel's family over this. If someone really doesn't know what the Día de Muertos is, the movie gives enough context clues for even kids to catch on.

Summary: Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

Coco, directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Alanna Ubach, and Benjamin Bratt. Grab it on Digital HD on February 13th and on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD on February 27th.
