J. Scott Campbell Black Cat #1 Cover Sells for $24,000 at Metropolis

Back in 2012, Bleeding Cool told you that the original cover art for Spider-Man #1 (1990) by Todd McFarlane sold for $358,500 — an impressive price for a 22-year-old piece of comic art that had already become an iconic touchstone of the modern era of comics.  In a way, this recent sale of a homage to that cover is every bit as impressive:

Metropolis Gallery has just sold J. Scott Campbell's Black Cat #1 variant cover original art that is a homage to the classic McFarlane image — from a comic book that was released just 6 months ago — for $24,000.

And even if Campbell original artwork is out of your price range, I'd still highly recommend making a visit to the Metropolis Gallery's J. Scott Campbell exhibit between now and January 31, if you're a Campbell fan or an original art fan. There's an awful lot you can learn about an artist by seeing the originals with your own eyes.

Metropolis Gallery's J. Scott Campbell exhibit is open for viewing every week through January 31, 2020, Tuesdays through Friday from 11am to 5pm. The gallery reported a packed house reception and their most successful exhibition launch ever. Vincent Zurzolo, founder and curator of the Midtown gallery, said Campbell collectors have purchased dozens of pieces so far.

"A couple of my favorite Black Cat pieces sold right away," Zurzolo said. "The cover to issue #1, an homage to Todd McFarlane's cover to Spider-Man #1, sold for $24,000 and the gorgeous cover to #3 went for $12,000."

Zurzolo reported the cover to Marvel Monograph: The Art of J. Scott Campbell sold for $15,000 and Campbells variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #800 went home for $12,000. "We've never had a busier opening night," Zurzolo continued. "Hundreds of passionate fans visited the gallery to meet the artist and celebrate their love and appreciation for his talents."

Metropolis Gallery is located at 36 West 37th Street, Floor 6, New York, NY 10018. The permanent collection and the J. Scott Campbell exhibit will be open until January 31, 2020. Call the gallery at 1-800-229-6387 or email them at info@metropolisgallerynyc.com for more information. Metropolis Gallery is accepting consignments for future gallery events.
