REVIEW: X-Men #4 — "Sit Face To Face With The Nations Of Man And Talk About Their Momma"

(Marvel Comics, creative team: Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguinan, Sunny Gho, Clayton Cowles)

With a backdrop of a real world deal-making back room for countries, the mutant nation of Krakoa sits down for a little conversation with the powers that be and it's a pay television worthy discussion of human history and aggression garnished with a dose of Scott Summers and the sword-wielding mutant Gorgon doing what they do best. Brilliantly wielded literary quotes, historical and economical analysis, secret teams of gun-wielding murderers and the polite veneer of tension when people are clearly geared up for a fight. This issue was a gem as Magneto, Professor X and Apocalypse basically sit face to face with the nations of man and talk about their momma in the most polite, congenial and friendly possible way while also coordinating enormous amounts of violence all around. This book is smart in all the right ways and shows the power and possibility at play here. Can it stick around to not go back to the "hunted and feared" status quo of yesteryear? There's no way to tell now, but today this is one superbly engaging, intelligent comic book. RATING: BUY.
