When the teenage demon hunter Clary Fray makes her big screen debut in this August's Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, it will be just the beginning for movies set inside novelist Cassandra Clare's universe of Shadowhunters and Downworlders.
But actually, it won't be the beginning of the story. It will be the middle.
George Lucas had a lot of powerful ideas. One was dropping us into the Star Wars saga part way through, or at least later pretending that's what he was doing all along. Then, a few years later, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ended up being a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Looks to me like George Lucas really has a thing about storytelling in episodes, and this love proved very infectious.
