DayZ Will Leave Early Access and Hit Consoles in 2018 Says Developer

DayZ is in a bit of a strange place. The game has remained popular since its release in December 2013 (and it's time as an Arma 2 mod since 2009), but it has had a very protracted development life. While games that spawned from its lead, like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds have gone on to be huge hits this year, DayZ is still tinkering away.

It seems an end is on the horizon though. In a post by Bohemia Interactive, it's revealed that the game is set to go into beta and leave early access sometime next year. Lead Producer Eugen Harton said of the release:

Let's just state the obvious: the PC BETA is not coming before the end of 2017. We tried to get it done sooner, but it's going to be 2018 folks. Both the BETA update and any further 0.63 updates, up to 1.0, will happen in 2018, which is shaping up to be one of the most important years for DayZ. That is as much as we are sure of yet. I'll be honest, it has been a long wait already – even for us – but that's all we got now.

DayZ BETA is not meant to be a feature complete game from our point of view. It's a start of a platform that will be extended by us, and can be extended by the modding community.

It's also said that the developer is looking to finally bring the game to consoles next year too. Alongside all this news, the next update for the game 0.63 is being pushed back into early 2018 too.

I certainly hope DayZ's time hasn't passed. The game has been kicking around as a thing for a long, long time now and its formula has been condensed and refocused into the battle royale genre. Perhaps once it finally comes out of early access though, people might want that slower, more methodical pace it offers.
