Is This The New Mewling Quim? From Jessica Jones Episode 13… (SPOILERS)

In the first Avengers movie, there was one phrase that echoed around the world. Loki's insult to the Black Widow a misogynist slur intended by him to reduce her to a pathetic representation of her gender, by was of an archaic English term, "mewling quim". It was also a moment that was instantly reversed with the revelation that the Black Widow was playing Loki, using his venality against him to reveal his plan.

And, yes, once everyone got out of the cinema they started googling it. So obviously I registered the domain name and linked back to an article about the phrase. Because I would.

Well it's been a while since we've had such a reductive archaic misogynist insult used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But we get one in the final episode of Jessica Jones, the new Netflix show from Marvel.

And this time it's from David Tennant, as Kilgrave, the Purple Man, spitting it over the phone at Jessica.

"you really are a little anal crumpet, aren't you?"

Crumpet, mid-twentieth century English slang for a sexually available young woman, but also a chewy breadcake full of holes, intended to be toasted and smothered with butter. The two are not entirely linguistically separate, and it does reduce a woman to something to be consumed, slaveringly.

It has been ironically used to describe women who are seen as considered attractive for more than just their looks as "thinking man's crumpet" and has also switched gender to "thinking woman's crumpet" as well.

Where the "anal" comes into that I don't know. The urban dictionary describes it as

The anal crumpet is an individual whose morals have collapsed into the rectum and much like hemorrhoids, they are painful to be around. This is an individual who is despicable and irrefutably nasty and has a history of being a player or attempting to be a player. The anal crumpet has no morals or is morally ambiguous, making them extremely unattractive or otherwise creepy.

A crumpet is a type of unsweetened bread usually served with tea. It is also often used in British slang to describe a woman who is sexually attractive. An anal crumpet is the exact opposite of the latter.

"My ex-husband cheated on me and lied about it! What an anal crumpet!"
