Netflix, '13 Reasons Why' Cast Still Renegotiating Contracts for Season 3

netflix 13 reasons season 3 contracts

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said during a recent annual shareholder meeting, "It (13 Reasons Why) is controversial. But nobody has to watch it." Now comes word that there's one reason why fans of the popular drama series might not get "to watch it" – and it has nothing to do with controversy.

With the first season 3 table read scheduled for Thursday and the start of production set for Monday, contract renegotiations between the eight main cast members, the streaming service and co-producer Paramount TV (with Anonymous Content) continued into Wednesday night with no deals finalized and word that the parties were still apart on money. Renegotiations for 13 Reasons Why come on the heels of fellow streaming service series Stranger Things securing a serious pay upgrade for their cast.

Some progress has been made, with Deadline Hollywood's exclusive report signaling that the sides have "bridged significantly" the gap in salary numbers and sources "sounded optimistic" that there wouldn't be a delay in season 3's production start. Though Paramount TV and Netflix would like to finalize renegotiations sooner rather than later, the actors are still under contracts and expected to show up to for work.

Here's how the numbers are reportedly looking:

● Season 3 lead Dylan Minnette is looking for a $200,000 per episode range; Brandon Flynn, Alisha Boe, Justin Prentice, Christian Navarro, Miles Heizer, Devin Druid, and Ross Butler are looking for $200,000 per episode ranges. The cast's start salaries had Minnette set in the $80,000 per episode range, with the remaining seven set in the $20,000 – $60,000 per episode range.

● For their part, Netflix is offering Flynn, Boe, Prentice, Navarro, Heizer, Druid, and Butler a deal that would put them at $135,000 per episode for Season 3, increasing to $150,000 per episode for Season 4. The salary gap in Minnette's renegotiations is said to be in the $20,000 range.

Developed by Brian Yorkey and based on Jay Asher's 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why, the breakout hit series has become one of Netflix's most watched series. The series has been both praised and criticized for its graphic depictions of suicide and sexual violence.
