Straight Outta Baltimore – Part One

Baltimore means three things to me. Proximity to Diamond Comics Distributors HQ, The Wire TV series (sometimes I merge the two and imagine Omar in charge of stacking pallettes of Dungeons & Dragons. "It's all in the game…") and the Baltimore Comic Con. But despite this tweet;

Now at the marriot bar waiting for the harveys to let out. Saw fraction and I believe rich johnston.

I wasn't there. I'm only flying out to America this Thursday. I did however have my Little Bleeder Jace Paul on the ground, keeping his eyes and ears open.

There has been a bit of online rivalry between Brian Bendis and Robert Kirkman this past year, over Kirkman's claims that creators should leave Marvel for Image, when Bendis had pulled his Powers book from Image, to Marvel. I understand that Kirkman was rather pleased that his signing queue was significantly longer than Bendis'. Of course, that could have been due to Bendis sketching as well as signing…

Talking of which Scott Adsit from 30 Rock was at the show in a personal capacity, spotted in the audience for Bendis' Powers panel. No disguise necessary…

After the DC Nation Panel I'm told that Brian Bendis and DC Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler were terribly cordial. Not the case, however, with DC"s VP Sales Bob Wayne and Brian Bendis, who came to blows previously over the non-existent Batman/Daredevil crossover. It was described as Maggie Simpson and the Unibrow baby…

At the Harvey Awards, one ex-publisher of a Big Four Comics Company was heard to hear to joke regarding the Best American Edition Of Foreign Material nomination for Viz' Solanin manga series "we bombed them 60 years ago, I guess we can nominate Viz now."

When Mark Morales won as Best Inker for Thor, he ran all the way from the back screaming that he was coming.

Brian JR Glass' win for Best New Talent for The Mice Templar brought him to tears and to hug everyone at his table, well, every woman anyway.

Steve Englehart's joke that the Best Domestic Reprint Project sounded the most boring award to win didn't go over too well with the recipients. And Neal Adams critique of DC Comics firing Bob Schreck, "who brought me back to comics" got a few ears wagging.

But as well as Bob Wayne accepting the Best Writer Award for Grant Morrison, he was gracious enough to let Schreck accept the Best Continuing Or Limited Series award for the book he edited and All Star Superman.

And Ian Sattler told Supergirl artist Jamal Igle that they needed to talk very privately later. Big things happening for Igle?

More coming through the pipe soon.

Bleeding Cool thanks to Jace Paul for providing much of the information for this article.
