Wednesday Runaround – Under The Influence

DCWatch: JT Krul kept his creative vision on Captain Atom.

"Tomorrow marks the release of Captain Atom #0, but it also marks the ending of the run that Freddie Williams and I launched as part of DC's New52. First and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone who enjoyed and supported the book, which includes everyone at DC especially Rachel Gluckstern, Mike Marts, and Rickey Purdin. From day one, Freddie and I had a strong vision of what we thought the book could be and that is exactly what you see in the finished product."

FloodWatch: Brockport gets a comic book education.

As a part of the Summer Reading Program, the College at Brockport will host author and illustrator Josh Neufeld Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Tuttle North Gym.

The lecture is part of a string of events that all coincide with New Orleans and Neufeld's graphic novel A.D. New Orleans After the Deluge.

This is the ninth year a book has been assigned to an incoming freshman class for summer reading.

This years choice marks the first time ever a graphic novel has been shared with students in the program.

EducationWatch: NPR'S Neal Conan talked with Brooke Gladstone about her graphic novel, The Influencing Machine

"The difference between a comic book and an illustrated book is in an illustrated book, the pictures support the text, but in a comic book the pictures replace the text. And as a result, I had to come up with every single image, and there's about a thousand of them. And I would write a panel in words and then I would cut it in half, and then I would figure out what could I indicate with the image, and then I would cut it in half again. So … every panel went through three written revisions before they even went through the three stages of drafting, penciling and inking. That's pretty intensive."

Wednesday Runaround – Under The Influence

ClotWatch: A British doctor is using comics to spread the word about the clotting aspects of a generically available drug, and how it can save lives.

Last week, he went further. "Bearing in mind that emergency docs have little time and lots of testosterone," he said, "I have prepared a manga comic that contains the main research findings but in the context of an exciting emergency department drama (romance is included)."

An advance copy of his comic was shown to a die-hard manga fan (this reporter's 19-year-old nephew, Conor Rabinovitz), who said that it looked more Western than Japanese but that its science was "interesting" and its romance "a nice little side gag." Mr. Rabinovitz suggested adding subtle links for doctors seeking more information, which Dr. Roberts called "an excellent idea."

DonateWatch: A Canadian comic collector donates $9,000 of comics books to a children's hospital.

Wednesday Runaround – Under The InfluenceThis is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.

They say I am a work in progress. The fools.
