Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 4th March 2018 – Speculators/Flippers Coming in Droves

This is the Top 10 Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

Terrifics #1 cover by Ivan Reis and Marcelo Maiolo

And DC Comics launches with a bang with The Terrifics, by a long way, the most successful New Age of Heroes title. Avengers also managed to beat Detective Comics, something unheard of, of late. And Saga monsters up the chart on its return ahead of its 50th issue.

Top Ten Bestselling comic books of the week.

  1. The Terrifics #1
  2. Avengers #682
  3. Detective Comics #975
  4. Saga #49
  5. Action Comics #998
  6. Thanos #16
  7. Star Wars: Darth Vader #12
  8. Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #300
  9. The Flash #41
  10. Invincible Iron Man #597

…who had this to say.

Thanos & Avengers could have easily been the #1 & #2 spots if I had ordered a ridiculous amount of them. In a disturbing trend that mirrors the behavior of the 90s, we had TONS of speculators /flippers coming into all the shops trying to buy multiple copies.

Our Top Ten this week was book-ended by Cates as Marvel continues to pick up steam as FIVE of the Top Ten and NINE of the Top Twenty at FFF were from the House of Ideas. Our #1 selling book this week was Thanos. Store favorite Donny Cates is no stranger to the Top Ten at our store. His other current Marvel book, Doctor Strange also made the Top Ten at #10. Avengers is still selling well at #8, halfway through their weekly series. Peter Parker's anniversary issue and Darth Vader were the other Marvel books in the Top Ten at #7 and #9.

For DC, they're still going strong, but they've also seemed to fall into predictable sales patterns. Detective and Action Comics are always strong sellers (as well as their sibling titles Batman and Superman). Flash usually makes the Top Ten and Wonder Woman teeters on the edge of the Top Ten and Top Twenty. The thing DC definitely has over Marvel though is that their books consistently sell well one or two weeks after the initial release. Batman #41 and Dark Knights Wild Hunt both sold well enough to place in the Top Twenty on their second and third weeks respectively.

On the indie side, Saga and Redneck were the only indie books in the Top Ten and Top Twenty. Saga is our store's best selling trade, but the single issue does well on its own. It was the #4 top seller this week. Redneck (the third Donny Cates book this week) was #13, falling just shy of the Top Ten.

Donny Cates wins the week with a bang! The only reason THANOS #16 didn't chart even higher is because we sold out of our (increased) order by 3pm on Wednesday. Dr. Strange was right behind that, and Marvel had more books on the top 10 (counting Darth Vader) than DC. I don't think has happened in a very long time. Saga continues to dominate any week it comes out though, and customers were stoked to see it back. Easy #1.

I was surprised that there wasn't any bigger sales on DC this week, and equally surprised that at the moment of typing this that we have maybe 2 copies left of Jim Henson's Labyrinth coronation left. The Staples cover went first and the Isaacs cover is flying now.

Another good week for Marvel. They had 4 books in the top 5. Black Panther was number 1. It's clearly still riding high because of the movie. Thanos continues to gain readers with every issue. Both The Terrifics and Mera had a strong debut for DC. Our Wednesday business has improved significantly the last 2 weeks. People are excited about comics again and they don't want their favorites to sell out before they get in.

Saga was pretty much the only thing that sold like it always does this week. It's been kind of slow probably because the weather has been unusually cold and rainy. But, our Saga sales were mostly unaffected and it was easily our bestseller this week. Matt Pizzolo and Amancay Nahuelpan's Calexit #2 finally came out, and it was our second best-selling title this week. It seems like excitement for the series is still going strong despite the long wait for #2, and we're still getting plenty of calls and questions from people looking for #1.

We have a rather refreshingly eclectic mix for a best sellers this week! DC's "New Age of Heroes" bookends the list, with TERRIFICS #1 taking our top seller spot and SIDEWAYS #2 in a tie for the 10th place spot.

Elsewhere, we've got the always-appreciated return of SAGA for a new arc and the conclusion of the DC/Young Animal Milk Wars event with DOOM PATROL JLA SPECIAL #1. The legacy renumbering of PETER PARKER SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN hits a major milestone with issue #300 (and a quite nice cover) to place it in the middle of the pack this week.

Perhaps most notably, we've got CALEXIT #2 in the bottom half of our list: a relief to fans, for some of whom the long delay had them worried about the future of the series. But it's back, and it looks like there's still a good amount of interest!

Pretty good sales week. The Terrifics outsold Detective for our top spot. It was very close but, wow, no Batman at #1 feels very strange. Avengers current run has kept it close to the top every week and was #3. People gearing up to welcome/say goodbye to Bendis puts Action Comics and Invincible Iron Man in the next spots. Surprisingly low single issue sales for the return of Saga but still enough for 6th place this week. Flash sees a return to the list. And after having been gone from the top ten list for months and months, Black Panther was the 10th best of the week. This may be the first time I have ever seen a direct sales jump in relation to the release of a comic book movie. Another new sight for me this week-

DC takes 7 of the Top 10 spots for us this week, with two Marvel and one Image title rounding out the list. The big surprise was the success of Terrifics #1, which handily took the top spot; this is the first major hit for the New Age of DC Heroes line.

Notable sales:

Detective Comics #880 NM (non slabbed) $200 It's the JOCK cover everyone wants

New Mutants #98 9.8 $790

NYX #3 $425 We sold a set of NYX including the first appearance of X-23 in the comics. We were originally going to sell #3 by itself, but were worried we'd be stuck with an incomplete set. Thankfully, somebody bought the run uninterrupted.

Avengers #87 FN- $85.00

Werewolf By Night #32VF/NM $600

Batman #227 FN $225 What an iconic cover!

Back issue sales of Fantastic Four have increased significantly in 2018. The success of Marvel 2-in-One has reminded readers how very good the Fantastic Four used to be. Lee/Kirby issues are selling particularly well.
