Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 5th November 2017 – "Marvel Still Seems To Be DOA"

This is the Top 10 Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

And Batman takes the top three followed by Metal's Justice League, Walking Dead and a fill-in Superman before we even get to the Marvel Legacy relaunch of Captain America from Waid and Samnee…

  1. Batman The Devastator #1
  2. Batman #34
  3. Batman White Knight #2
  4. Justice League #32
  5. Walking Dead #173
  6. Superman #34
  7. Captain America #695
  8. Star Wars Darth Vader #7
  9. Paper Girls #17
  10. Deadman #1

Thanks to the following retailers,

Who had this to say,

Batman and company continue to steamroll the rest of the competition this week as Metal and Batman titles take the top four spots on the FFF Top Ten list. The Devastator and Justice League Metal tie-in issue were the top two selling books. Batman and White Knight followed close behind. Darth Vader was the only Marvel book in the Top Ten just barely outselling Walking Dead. The shocker of the week had to be Deadman selling on par with Injustice. Neal Adams hasn't been putting out his best work in recent years, but Boston Brand might just fit his current out of his mind writing style.

Paper Girls, Saga and Babyteeth (on they're second and fourth week respectively) were the other indie books that made it into the Top Twenty. Babyteeth is a popular book at our store for sure, but the Halloween Comic Fest definitely helped boost the numbers a bit.

The only other Marvel book to break the Top Twenty was Astonishing X-Men which sold the same amount as Babyteeth (again, on it's fourth week). Legacy is already running out of steam to which should come as a shock to absolutely no one. Turns out big numbers don't make up for lack of direction and back peddling on character development.

DC and Metal especially have been killing it for a while now and don't seem to be stopping anytime soon. When Harley & Ivy meet Betty & Veronica sells more than Captain America, then you know you as a publisher have made some missteps that need to be addressed. Or you could just start only publishing Star Wars and X-Men comics from now on.

Not a bad week. Marvel got Darth Vader into the top ten. Other than that no Marvel made it into the top ten. Biggest surprise was that Deadman 1 sold out and made the top ten. Ragman 1 outsold Amazing Spiderman that came out last week. Never thought I would ever see that. Marvel still seems to be DOA.

A group of time displaced teenage girls is all that kept Batman from total domination this week– PAPER GIRLS #17 comes in 3rd behind Batman and White Knight. Mark Waid & Chris Samnee gave Cap his first appearance on our top ten in quite some time, and deservedly so. Otherwise Marvel's Legacy offerings are not moving the needle one way or the other. Extremity continues to outperform, still hanging out in the top 10, albeit at the bottom. The final tally: DC has 5 books, Image 3, and Marvel 2.

No surprises at all. Batman and Walking Dead almost entirely pushed Marvel out of the top 5 except for Captain America which fared better than most Marvel Legacy titles. Deadman's cool glow-in-the-dark cover flew off the shelf even at a dollar higher than the standard copies.

Anything Batman completely dominates every week. Anything Metal related always makes the top 5. The big surprise was that Black Panther made the top 10 for the second week in a row. Captain America and Spider-man also did very well this week.

Batman White Knight #2 would have been higher had UPS not crunched all of Cover A.
Still not seeing much interest in Legacy beyond people already getting the titles. No new readers. Not sure where they go from here.

It was an Image and DC-heavy week for us, with Paper Girls as our bestseller and Batman White Knight #2 and Batman the Devastator right behind it. No. 1 With A Bullet, the new Image series from Jacob Semahn and Jorge Corona, was sold really well for us this week, showing up around the middle of our bestseller list. This near-future tale of extreme internet harassment that straddles the line between mystery and horror is definitely timely and, unfortunately, probably relatable for many.

As usual, the week went to the Caped Crusader. Our top mover was JUSTICE LEAGUE #32, but it was -of course- a Metal tie-in. BATMAN #34, BATMAN THE DEVASTATOR #1, BATMAN THE MERCILESS #1, and Sean Murphy's BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT #2 worked to dominate half of our best sellers list for the week.

Elsewhere, Marvel's Legacy re-numbering squeezes in at the bottom of the list with IRON FIST #74, AVENGERS #673, and the ever-reliable team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee on CAPTAIN AMERICA #695.

Dead center in the list we have PETER PARKER THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6, a book I am happy to see going into so many reader's hands because this was a *great* Spidey story. For my money, Zdarsky is really delivering on that title.

Marvel managed one spot in our store's Top Ten, and that went to Captain America #695, which took 8th place. Otherwise, it was DC all the way, with Batman taking the top three slots (and the fourth book, Justice League, was a Batman tie-in). Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #6 was two copies away from tying for tenth place–and had the book featured stronger art, it might well have broken into the Top Ten (several were intrigued by our hand-selling pitch for the story, but turned off by the artwork).

And sales of note this week,

Marvel Preview #7 $125 First Rocket Raccoon in magazine form

Marvel Super Special Kiss #r 1 VF $7
