A Christmas Day Debut for Tula Lotay's Variant to Abbot #1

Hugo Award-nominated writer Saladin Ahmed (Marvel's Black Bolt, The Crescent Moon Kingdoms novels) has been appearing on a ton of "Best of 2017" lists recently, including EW.

Boom! Studios is home to his first creator-owned comic series in Abbott. Not only is Sami Kivelä (Black Mask's Beautiful Canvas) providing interiors, but Tula Lotay is doing the FOC variant cover…

The series is about a black woman journalist in 1970s Detroit named Elena Abbott who investigates a series of grisly crimes the police have ignored—crimes she recognizes to be the work of a dark magical force—the same force that murdered her husband 10 years ago. As she looks for clues, Abbott puts herself in the crosshairs of a mysterious power out for more blood, all the while navigating a harsh social environment that's structured to protect the powerful, and prevent access to change.

If you're a fan of Saladin's writing.- both fictional and on social media – you know he's the kind of writer who doesn't shy away from the tough questions and even tougher answers, sometimes even generating international discussion (like his recent criticism of Kellogg's). So when you combine those sensibilities with a POC female lead in 1970's Detroit, echoing the socio-political issues still relevant today, it's not crazy to think there might be some provocative and explosive moments coming up in this series.

Out on the 24th January, going for FOC in the first week of 2018…
