ComiXology Bestseller List, 12th July 2019 – Go Watch Snowpiercer

Matthew Snyder brings it on, jotting down the digitally delivered comic book of the week in his usual weekly run down. He writes,Welcome to the ComiXology Bestseller list, your guide to see how well your favorite titles are selling digitally. Every week I'll post the ranking of every new title, plus a ranking of the best selling volumes & graphic novels. As always, I hope you find it interesting and informative.

Stop right there.

Every week I catalog the best selling digital comic list for you, and you never do anything for me. This is a toxic one sided relationship. So if you want to see who won this week and how well your favorite comics did, you have to pay a toll.

And that toll is: go watch Snowpiercer.

Seriously, it's an incredible film. The whole world is frozen and the last humans on Earth are on a train that's circulating the globe, and…. well I won't spoil into it, but it is a damn awesome movie. I've seen it 20 times myself, and it gets better with every viewing. And luckily for you, it's back on Netflix.

So watch it right now. I'm serious, stop reading, go watch Snowpiercer and come back. I'll wait.

……….

See, isn't your life better for having seen it? Did it make you think about class structure and want we're doing to the environment? Or were you more focused on Chris Evans kicking ass? Or Tilda Swinton's scene-stealing performances. No answer is wrong, because Snowpiercer is many things to many people.

Alright, I'm already pushing Jude Terror levels of clickbait, so let's reveal who won the Top 10 this week:

  • DC: 33
  • Marvel: 15
  • Image: 7

Yep, with Batman being delayed and The Walking Dead still lingering around like some sort of… undead monster thing, any chance of a Marvel victory was crushed. Of course, it didn't help Marvel the latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man was $8, leading it to perform under expectations.

This is a huge "duh", but increased prices can lead to decreased sales. Same thing happened with the Event Leviathan Special that kicked off this current event. A $10 price tag led to it barely cracking the Top 10. And it had nothing to do with the popularity of the event itself. Event Leviathan took the No. 1 spot during the 2nd week last month and would have again if it wasn't for that pesky Batman delay. So comic companies, maybe you should consider only making special occasion comics $8 or $10. Like a 1,000th issue.

You know, a real 1,000th issue. Not a fake 1,000th signify a number that could've been real if it actually happened. But what am I talking about? Nobody could possibly be that sad and desperate to pull off a gimmick like that.

But as much as DC is still dominating in the Top 10, several of their titles that got off to promising starts are slipping further down the charts. I already told you about the recent disappointing results of Hawkman, Wonder Twins and Catwoman,  but now Batman & The Outsiders and Justice League Odyssey will soon be joining that conversation if they don't get their act together. Yes, it's a loaded week, but their position compared to other titles keeps dropping. I'm not ready to hit the alarm button yet, but these two titles are starting to feel the heat.

And before anyone start accuses me of playing favorites, yes, Red Hood: Outlaw's ranking is not ideal, but it's been declining at a much slower rate with more issues. Of course, it probably wouldn't have declined at all if a certain someone hadn't broken up the perfect trio of Jason, Artemis and Bizarro. Just saying.

I mean, would you do that to a hit TV show, DC? What if you removed 2/3 of the cast of The Office after the 3rd season, stuck them and Pam in another dimension and never checked up on them? Might ruin the whole show dynamic, huh?

Okay, that's too much editorializing, even for me. I'll take a breather and see you next week.
