Comixology Bestseller List, 14th December 2018 – An Annual Surprise

Lex Luthor: WROOONNNNGGGG!!!!

He's right. Because instead of waiting for a 5th Wednesday, DC has decided to release Batman Annual #3 in one of the most crowded weeks of the year. The result is Tom Taylor getting his first ever No. 1. (Or at least since I started writing this in March).

But Holy Guacamole, Batman! There's 4 Batman comics in the top 6 slots. Tom Taylor and Otto Schmidt's Batman Annual, Scott Snyder and Jock's The Batman Who Laughs, Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo's Batman: Damned and Peter Tomassi and Doug Mahnke's Detective Comics. Detective Comics landing at No. 6 is notable, because with a permanent writer taking over, it has recovered some ground lost after James Tynion left. But despite DC taking 5 out of the top 6, Marvel filled the rest of the Top 10 to force a 5-5 tie. It's a cheap tie, considering DC took the top spots, but it's a tie nonetheless.

But while DC scored big this week with Bats and Supes, other members of the Justice League are showing diminishing returns. Wonder Woman, which got a boost thanks to a Justice League Dark crossover and a new writer in G. Willow Wilson, has dropped back below The Flash, its gains evaporated.

Speaking of The Flash, it's hard to believe this is the same comic 10 issues ago was riding high at No. 2. I can understand Wonder Woman's wild ride, but Joshua Williamson has been on The Flash since day one. It would appear some readers just lost interest after Flash War. Which is a shame, because they're missing out on the cutest couple in comics. (Believe me, I'd carry my googles-wearing girlfriend everywhere if I could).

So is a reboot in the works for these two titles? I know that sounds drastic, but both books are putting out the same numbers as Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. And now we have The Green Lantern, while appearing only monthly, is so far one of DC's best selling new digital comics of the year. I'm not saying I want this to happen, but given DC's pattern lately, I wouldn't be shocked if they were planning something along these lines.
