DC Comics to Announce New Freedom Fighters Series at San Diego?

On Monday, Bleeding Cool will run our regular San Diego Comic-Con Checklist, featuring a number of stories we expect to be announced at SDCC by a number of publishers. But, as ever, mostly DC Comics. They've already confirmed our story that G. Willow Wilson would be the new Wonder Woman writer, but there's plenty more to come.

And to throw another into the pot, we hear from a very reliable source that DC Comics will be announcing a new Freedom Fighters comic book series.

Originally appearing in Justice League of America in 1973, and created by Len Wein and Dick Dillin, the Freedom Fighters are a superhero team that gathered up characters from the '40s published by Quality Comics and acquired by DC Comics, originally Black Condor, Doll Man, the Human Bomb, Ray, Phantom Lady, and Uncle Sam. An ongoing series premiered with Freedom Fighters #1 in 1976, written by Gerry Conway and Martin Pasko, and drawn by Ric Estrada.

The Crisis on Infinite Earths series brought the characters into the DC Universe proper, as part of the All-Star Squadron, but The Human Bomb, Black Condor, and Phantom Lady were later killed off in Infinite Crisis. New versions of the characters joined a new team for Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters in 2006 by Grant Morrison, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Justin Gray.

After the New 52, the characters were sidelined into an alternate world again, part of the Multiversity on Earth 10. But now? Well, maybe we'll find out in a week's time…
