"Dispatch From Disney" #1 Up For Sale At Heritage

Growing up I was always fascinated by WWII whenever we learned about it, but as an adult that turned more into an interest of the pop culture of that time period. Countries all over the world were churning out propaganda for or against the Nazi's, the American's, and everyone else. Walt Disney himself–who has always been a proud American, and served during WWI after faking his papers–got his creations into the action with various cartoon shorts, and magazines such as Disney Dispatch. The most notable of these shorts is Der Fuehrer's Face starring Donald Duck. If you've never seen it before, take a few moments and just watch:

At the same time, Disney released a digest magazine titled Dispatch From Disney (1943). The magazine is currently up for auction at Heritage.

Rare first issue of a Disney digest-sized publication that was sent to Disney employees stationed in the armed forces during World War II and selected others. Great studio articles and artwork, including Donald Duck tossing a tomato at Hitler on the front cover, and Disney Insignia artwork on the back. The gem of this lot is the 6" x 10" pull-out of "Pin-Ups For Servicemen From the Walt Disney Staff." Images include artwork done by Disney Legend Inductees Fred Moore and Bill Justice. Fine condition.

I have a feeling this book will break $450. One sold via Hakes in 2014 for $487.02, a copy had sold in 2012 for $382, but that's all I can find for the book. Interiors are easy to find via Google, and I am deeply envious of whomever wins this book. It's a prime example of American propaganda during WWII, and the juxtaposition of having the bright, cheery Disnsey characters against a harsh reality background is nothing short of fascinating. It's also a striking message to send to people; if Donald Duck can do it, so can you.
