Moving The Needle – Bleeding Cool's Top 11 Hottest Writers, April 2017

Remember when Wizard Magazine used to do these top ten lists every month? So do we. Now with a new name inspired by Axel Alonso, this list was put together after consultation with retailers, publishers and statistics regarding the demand for comic book creator's works and their media coverage… and placed into a mysterious algorithm.

And we added one more for luck.

donny-cates

1. Donny Cates. Two months at the top. God Country became the hottest rising comic right now, and then he successfully transferred his new audience onto Redneck. But will he be just a two-hit wonder?

Geoff-Johns-Rings1

2. Geoff Johns. It all happened. The man who dared bring Watchmen to the DC Universe plotted the current Batman/Flash Button series that is blowing everything else away. Two for two.

3. Dan Jurgens. The man who took DC's New 52 Superman and threw it all away (except for the lack of underwear on the outside). Almost nothing of the New 52 now remains, and the sales have followed.

4. Nick Spencer. Secret Empire is ramping up big time and destroying everything in its wake, in term of sales and possibly hope.

5. Tee Franklin. The Kickstarter performance of Bingo Love blew everyone away, and has already been picked up for laudits and praise, including the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant, while Tee remains a frank and notable voice courted by many.

tom-king

6. Tom King. Batman writer de jour and chart-topper, his Justice Society teases have driven the internet wild.

7. Cullen Bunn Never a week seem to go by without a new announcement of a Cullen Bunn comic, whether Marvel, Oni, AfterShock, IDW, Ragnarok, with the launch of Regression next month from Image gaining all sorts of attention. It's the Happy Bunndays.

8. Josh Williamson The success of Flash may, this second, be down to a certain smiley face, but the comic has been consistently improving on its prebirth performance. As people have, basically, just been digging the comic book a lot more. Combined with Birthright and Nailbiter, there's a lot of love.

9. Brian K Vaughan The world is on tenterhooks for the next Saga, destined to sell half a million. But Russia's hackers have faikled to gte it out of him or Fiona Staples…

10. James Tynion IV, with a success in Detective Comics holding it's own, he's also been picked to write The Immortal Men with Jim Lee launching later this year. Allegedly. And his current Batman comics setting up the whole Dark Days thing in the first place. Also, you know, Woods.

11. Brennan Lee Mulligan, actor, comedian and improviser, the writer of Strong Female Protagonist has seen a considerable amount of interest with a very strong Kickstarter offer for the new collection.
