Canadian Premier Learnt To Speak English With… You Guessed ItWhile US Senators use comic books as a short hand for American illiteracy, in Canada, reports value the use of comic books encourging children to read.

And no wonder, ex-premier Bill Vander Zalm who held the position for the British Columbian province from 1986 to 1991, says that he "discovered the joy of reading" when he "taught himself English at the age of 12 by reading comic books."

Archie, Donald Duck and Superman were the characters of choice for the young immigrant from Holland after the war. "Comic books were a way of escaping into another world… They helped me learn to communicate and to make friends. Those were big things."

Of course, Zalm was forced from office after he was found to have used his public position to help his private business selling gardens. Not quite sure which issue of Superman he got that idea from…
