Hailee Steinfeld's Sleeping Beauty Don't Need No Stinking Kiss

Hailee Steinfeld's Sleeping Beauty Don't Need No Stinking Kiss

Kate Atherton writes for Bleeding Cool:

Without doubt, one of the stars of Oscar season was Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit's Mattie Ross. Mattie demonstrated through word and deed that she was the equal of any hired gun when it came down to the wire. With her nomination for best actress, Hailee showed she was a worthy contender herself.

Deadline has revealed today that Hailee Steinfeld is attached to a new reworking of Sleeping Beauty. Written by Lindsay Devlin, this version will tell the story through the eyes of the Sleeping Beauty herself. She finds herself falling asleep and has to fight her way through it to wakefulness.

Sleeping Beauty is a popular theme for moviemakers at the moment. A modern reworking of the tale has been filmed in Australia, directed by Julia Leigh and starring Emily Browning, while Tim Burton is set to film an evil witch's version of the tale in Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie attached to the leading role.

Just as True Grit showed that the western has many more years of life left in it for new generations to enjoy, the revival of Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales results from a renewed interest in these ageless stories. Hailee Steinfeld may be just the girl for the job.

Editor's note: And these new versions are doubtlessly going to be more… friendly to feminist concerns, shall we say.
