Aardman Animation, creators of Wallace and Gromit, Morph and (back in the mists of time), the animated Superhero, Aardman, are working on a couple of features for release through Sony. The first will be the CG-rendered Arthur Christmas, due for release guess-when, and then we'll see their return to full-length stop motion hijinks.
The film Pirates!, or Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists is being directed by Peter Lord, one of Aardman's founders and the man who called the shots on Chicken Run. It's based upon a book by Gideon Defoe, and could spawn a series derived from his other piracy tales.
It doesn't seem to be official, but the only voice casting I know of on the film is David Tenant. I have no idea what role he'll be playing.
Below are a series of pictures showing props and sets from the film – and if you look closely, partial views of the character puppets – and a number of sketches from Peter Lords' Pirates! notebook, and as shared on Twitter.
The colour sketches are not by Lord, but one of the film's concept artists. It's not clear how accurate they will prove to be.
It all looks great, don't you think? How long, I wonder, until Aardman and Sony see fit to release some images of the characters, or of completed shots?
