Josh Hylton writes for Bleeding Cool:
Tyler Perry is a man with a built in fanbase.* Regardless of whether or not his movies are any good, you can be sure they'll grab plenty of cash at the box office. Nonetheless (and though I'm probably in no real position to judge, having seen only one of his movies) he doesn't seem like the ideal candidate for the lead in what could be an action oriented movie.
But here we are nonetheless. Variety has confirmed that Perry has taken over the role of Alex Cross from Idris Elba in I, Alex Cross, the origin story of the famous sleuth. If the name sounds familiar, it's because he has already appeared twice onscreen in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider with Morgan Freeman portraying him.
There's no real information on the story yet, but the script is currently undergoing rewrites with a start date for sometime in June. Rob Cohen (xXx, The Fast and the Furious) will direct.
*Editor's note: And a very specific fanbase that want some pretty specific films from him. I can't see his fans crossing over to this en masse.
