At that moment, a woman at the next table stood and walked away. Her cell phone tumbled from her coat pocket and landed quietly on the carpet. Batman sprang to his feet. He ran after her, his purple cape flapping behind him, a jiggle to the middle-age belly pressing against his utility belt. He tapped her on the shoulder. She stopped and stared up at him. He handed over her cell phone. She brightened. "Thank you, Batman," she said.

Batman nodded and watched her walk off, then he dropped into a chair, crossed one leg over the other and sighed. He had been on his feet all day.
