The Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 4th August, 2019 – Fifth Week Madness

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. Powers of X's debut issue tops the second issue of Snyder and Capullo's Last Knight but only just, with The Batman Who Laughs a gnat's quaver behind. Fifth week for DC Comics doesn't seem to have stymied them, with the Green Lantern and Justice League Dark Annual doing better than may have been anticipated as well… and Spawn makes it into the Top Ten again ahead of Spawn #300…

Who had this to say:

DC managed to place three Bat-books and a Green Lantern annual in our store's top ten, Marvel took five slots, and Image took one with Spawn 299. DC sales continue to collapse as fans complain that most DC titles read like New 52 all over again. Where's Geoff Johns when we need him?

Strong week. Crazy week. Sold more House of X the Saturday after it came out than on the Wednesday it came out on. Powers of X sold out Wednesday. We could have sold more if we would have had more copies. Was told the other stores in the area sold out so our supply was taken out by the demand. Hickman still has the magic. Batman Last Knight on Earth 2 took first due to us having more on hand. Sonic the Hedgehog Tangle & Whisper 1 made our top ten. Sonic's upcoming movie has people checking out his various comics. Sold more Sonic comics last weekend than a whole month's worth of Avengers comics. We have more people with Sonic on their pull lists than Avengers. Go figure.

Batman can laugh all he wants, but Powers of X still outsold it twofold. It marks the first time since Batman Who Laughs began that the new issue didn't lead sales. In fact, it was outsold by Batman Curse of the White Knight as well. That said, I think it's safe to say the Batman Who Laughed His Last still went out with a bang, it just happened to be overshadowed entirely by Hickman's formidable X-Men relaunch. Given that it was the fifth Wednesday of the month, the rest of this week's sales were pretty paltry, littered mostly with annuals and books that do well enough but don't typically make it into our top 10, like Stranger Things and TMNT. I've got a feeling HoxPoX is going to be dominating sales until its end.

Much like last week, Hickman's re-shaping of the X-titles is the undisputed top seller. The debut issue of POWERS OF X outsold our next best seller of the week by more than double. Are the X-Men perhaps going to reclaim their position as the undisputed king of superhero titles? Probably not, but it's nice to see people genuinely excited about them again.

The next three spots go, unsurprisingly, to the Caped Crusader. The second issue of the three-part BATMAN LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH, the finale to BATMAN WHO LAUGHS, and the second helping of BATMAN SECRET FILES all sold well. I have to say, it was nice to have a few heavy-hitters on the racks for a 5th Wednesday.

Middle of the list is some of Marvel and DC's stronger-selling workhorse titles: GREEN LANTERN, FANTASTIC FOUR, and the like.

Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates holds down the bottom spots on our best sellers list with both CAPTAIN AMERICA and BLACK PANTHER selling respectably this week.
