Sony and Blumhouse Travel to Fantasy Island on February 28, 2020
Fantasy Island, the upcoming reimagining of the classic television show from Sony and Blumhouse has a release date. The film will open on February 28, 2020, and will film next year. Truth or Dare and Blumhouse veteran director Jeff Wadlow will direct, and his T&D co-writers Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs will help him pen the script. Blumhouse head Jason Blum will produce with Wadlow serving as an executive producer as well. Michael Pena, Lisa Hale, Jimmy O. Yang, Portia Doubelday, Maggie Q and Ryan Hansen have all been cast.
Fantasy Island aired on ABC from 1978 until 1984. On the show, the mysterious Mr. Roarke welcomed visitors to an island and granted them their fantasies for a price. The series was proceeded by two television films in 1977 and 1978. The iconic Ricardo Montalbán made the role of Mr. Roarke famous, but it was Hervé Villechaize's Tattoo and his famous cry of "Ze plane! Ze plane!" when new guests would arrive on the island. Roarke would teach people lessons through their fantasies by showing them the error of their ways, and sometimes they would die.
This could prove to be a huge franchise for Blumhouse if they play their cards right. Pena is a wonderful choice for the role, as anyone who has seen the Ant-Man MCU films can attest. He has the swagger and demeanor to carry himself wiht the elegance and charm that Montalbán brought to the role. Sequels could bring new people to the island over and over. With The Purge series successfully transitioning to television, they can use one of those reliable film series like it to take its place on the big screen. This could be it.
