The lead character in Duncan Jones' Warcraft movie will be a chap called Khadgar, I understand. Here's how I previously described him when laying out all of the info I had on the film:
a young consul to the Kirin Tor senate, rulers of the city of Dalaran. Early in the story, Khadgar is charged with investigating a series of crimes that have rocked the city, but as we go on, we'll find that his mission leads him into a quest beyond the city walls.
Not quite how he was conceived in the games, I'm told.
I think all of the new names mentioned by Deadline as contenders for lead roles in the movie are Khadgar possibles. They list Travis Fimmel, best known for the TV show Vikings. At 34, he's the oldest. Then there's the 29-year old Paul Dano of There Will Be Blood, and the 24 year old Anton Yelchin of Star Trek.
I think I know Dano and Yelchin's styles well enough that a pretty vague, but intriguing image of the movie Khadgar is starting to form.
Production on Warcraft is set for the first part of next year with Legendary Pictures producing. It's an ambitious project, and I think it's going to take a lot of Jones' skill to get the tone right. I really can't wait to see what he comes up with. The game just doesn't have much depth on character in my mind, so this film is going to pretty much serve as my introduction to this world.
