All the American marketing for The Grandmasters has been pretty terrible so far and the latest trailer is no exception. It also goes a little overboard on spelling out the Ip Man/Bruce Lee connection – as does the U.S. cut of the film, reportedly.
That voiceover… jeez.
In addition to marketing The Grandmasters in a slightly cheap and tacky way The Weinstein Company are also releasing it in America long after it has been available in cinemas around the world, and in some countries on DVD and Blu-ray. And remember – there's isn't the original cut, but one that reportedly simplifies the story. Wong Kar-wai was involved in this new edit but everything I'm hearing about it sounds worrying.
The film is set to be released in America on the 23rd of August but not before it has had its first U.S. screening at Comic-Con on the 20th of July. Deadline say that Wong Kar-wai will also be there too to help promote the film, presumably a little confused about the location and date for his US premiere.
