David Zaslav Isn't Worried About The Future Of DC

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav isn't worried about the future of DC Studios even after Supergirl underperformed this summer.

DC is heading into the fall on a weirder foot than they likely expected. Heading into 2026, everyone likely thought that Supergirl was going to be the sure thing; they didn't need to worry about that movie doing well at the box office. People were going to show up for it. Then they could release Clayface later in the year, make it more experimental, and if it didn't quite connect with audiences, it wouldn't matter as much because Supergirl had laid that foundation.

However, sometimes things don't work out the way we expect, and Supergirl had a hard time finding its audience. Now, Clayface is under a lot more pressure to perform, and for all the handwringing that people think this means the future of DC is doomed, the guy who signed the checks still sounds pretty happy. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was asked during an earnings call (via The Wrap) about the future of DC, and he was firmly focused on it and sounded optimistic.

"On the DC side, James is focused on 'Man of Tomorrow.' I saw some pictures yesterday that looked amazing. Actually, yesterday [August 5] was James' birthday, and he's out working. He's working 16, 18 hours a day. It looks fantastic. We're super excited about it. Matt Reeves, I spoke to over the weekend, and he's working very hard on Batman."

If people were expecting him to address Supergirl's underperformance directly, he did not; however, Zaslav did spotlight upcoming DC titles on both the big screen and streaming. Zaslav said, "We have 'Clayface' coming up soon, which looks terrific. We got 'Lanterns' launching in the next few weeks on HBO, which Casey [Bloys] and Sarah [Aubrey] are super excited about. So DC feels very good, and we have a robust pipeline, and Peter and James are hard at work."

So this summer didn't quite follow the trajectory everyone thought it would, and that's true for other studios, not just Warner Bros. Being able to pivot or push through will define the next couple of years over at DC Studios. There are a lot of big projects in the works, both movies and television, but even something as big as DC can only take so many big box office blows like Supergirl. The next few releases are going to be very interesting to watch.
