Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson to Direct a Labyrinth Sequel

When Scott Derrickson decided to leave Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, everyone was kind of surprised. It didn't seem like there was any bad blood between Marvel and the director and everyone cited "creative differences" for why he left the project. Derrickson is a fascinating director, and everyone wondered what he was going to do next, and now we know what. According to Deadline, Derrickson has been tapped by TriStar Pictures to direct a sequel to Jim Henson's classic movie Labyrinth. Not only does this sequel have a director, but they also have a writer. Maggie Levin, who wrote Into the Dark and My Valentine for Hulu is going to work on the script.

This isn't that big of a surprise that TriStar is looking to make a sequel to Labyrinth.  The movie has a huge cult following that it has maintained since it was first released in 1986. Nostalgia is the way of the world these days, and what was old is now very much new. Henson properties are also getting new life in the modern age. In 2019 The Dark Crystal got reimagined as a prequel TV show in Netflix titled The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance. While Netflix tends to be rather quiet about its numbers, the show got a ton of critical and fan acclaim. The show hasn't been renewed for season 2 at the time of writing, but everyone involved seems keen to make that happen.

As for Labyrinth, after the success of The Dark Crystal, it was really only a matter of time. The much later sequels are hit and miss when it comes to the box office and critical acclaim, but who knows. There was a lot of love put into The Dark Crystal, and that's why it did so well. If TriStar Pictures makes sure to do the same for this sequel, they might have a follow-up to a cult classic on their hands.
