From here on out, spoilers. Maybe. Depending on how much Disney's marketers are selling the surprises of The Winter Soldier down the river in return a good TV spot moment.
So, in this TV spot, Steve Rogers says something about…
… Fury's last words.
Combine that with the surgery happening on a figure under a sheet, being dilligently watched over by folk who would care a lot about Fury. And then how that same figure appeared to be deceased in the Superbowl trailers, and… well, it's looking like they're actually, really killing him off.
Of course, it looked like they were killing off Phil Coulson in The Avengers.
My hunch is that either Fury does got killed… or, perhaps, we the audience will know he isn't dead even while the characters are misled. Just because that dramatic irony is something different to what has come before.
The one thing I really don't believe Marvel will do is play the same hand twice. They're too aware of how closely they're being watched for things like that.
Looking back over all of the footage released to date, I think he's gone. I think this really is the end of the road for Nick Fury.
Aw, man. I was really looking forward to Samuel L. Jackson getting more Joss Whedon dialogue in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
