The Osterman Weekend is one of the Sam Peckinpah pictures it's okay to remake (well, I think it's okay to remake them all, but I know some people are sentimental about these things). One reason this would get the nod, perhaps, is that Peckinpah's film was already adapted itself, from Robert Ludlum's novel of the same name.
nother is that it wasn't actually such a great picture, not really. Definitely not when compared to the best of Peckinpah's work.
But it did have a fun tagline that certainly got to the heart of things:
What would you do if a total stranger proved to you that your three closest friends were Soviet agents?"
The new version has been scripted by Simon Kinberg and Jesse Wigutow — the writers who have been working on the new X-Men and The Crow films respectively. And according to Deadline, Game of Thrones and Luther director Brian T. Kirk is negotiating a deal to take up the megaphone here.
Kirk also has Paper Wings and Midnight Delivery in the works. The former is a rodeo drama with Tom Cruise attached; the latter is a drug mule thriller with a script by Luther creator Neil Cross. Any of these could go first, of course, and we'll just have to wait and see which it will be.
