Hunter S. Thompson Burns Christmas Tree; Parts Of His Home In Archival Video

As Open Culture noted, writer Hunter S. Thompson — focus of the films Where The Buffalo Roam and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas — made a tradition of setting his Christmas tree on fire following the holidays. In 1990, Thompson taped the burning while evading an interview with Time reporter Sam Allis.

In the video, both Allis and Thompson's long-time secretary Deborah Fuller can be heard pleading with Thompson not to set the tree on fire as it would not fit in the fireplace. After the footage cut to sometime later, Thompson asked, "Are we on fire inside?" The house survived and the burn marks from the 1990 tree fire can still be seen to this day.
