Iron Man Was "Always" Part Of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

When Marvel and Sony announced that Spider-Man was coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and getting his own in universe movie a lot of fans were extremely pleased. They were less pleased when it was announced that Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) would be making an appearance in the movie. Downey Jr. is a big personality that's hard to compete against and we've already had two Avengers movies that felt far too focused on him. People were wondering if Iron Man was shoved into a Spider-Man movie at the request of Downey Jr. or at the last minute as a publicity push. Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Wattsspoke to Den of Geek and was asked when Iron Man was added to the script.

He was always a part of it. That was always a big part, the idea of him being this reluctant mentor – or the unintentional mentor – to Peter. Like, just sort of the grand ambition to be like that someday.

Iron Man Was "Always" Part Of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'Stark does have an important role to play to Peter because he was the one that got Peter involved with the fight in Germany. Peter was running around New York before Stark scooped him up and put this kid, and he is a kid, into a giant brawl with super human characters. Watts went on to talk about how old Peter would have been when Stark made his announcement and how that would effect a little kid.

Because if you think about it, now that Spider-Man is in the Marvel universe, that means that Peter Parker was probably like eight years old when he saw Tony on TV telling the world he's Iron Man. And when you start thinking about it as a whole world like that, it gets really fascinating. You know?

This also aligns with the fan theory we had confirmed not long ago that the kid we see at the Stark Expo in Iron Man 2 was Peter Parker. Watts goes on to talk about how meeting someone like Stark and getting taken to Germany for the fight would effect someone with a teenagers mindset.

And now the most famous person in the world has picked Peter Parker and taken him on this crazy adventure, and now dropped him back off and gone to deal with his own thing. And here's Peter, left in his bedroom, you know, having had the greatest experience of his life, and not being able to tell anyone about it. That would be crazy!

Iron Man Was "Always" Part Of 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'Stark essentially drops Peter back into his life and expects him to keep doing his normal thing like he didn't just fight Captain America. Stark has his presence felt throughout the entire narrative and after seeing the movie it is obvious it was crafted with him in mind. Despite him being there he's not there so much that he takes over the entire production as some were worried.

Summary: Following the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), Peter Parker attempts to balance his life in high school with his career as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Michael Keaton. Swing on down to your local theater and check it out on July 7th.
