Kevin Feige Reacts to 'Black Panther' Best Picture Oscar Nomination
We were delightfully shocked this morning when the 91st Academy Awards nominations came in, and Marvel Studios groundbreaking Black Panther got 7 Oscar nominations including Best Picture.
Also, just LOOK at this fabulous piece BossLogic did to celebrate the occasion:
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is also understandably delighted, as he tells The New York Times:
"I watched them this morning for the first time in many years,I set my alarm, and I haven't done that since I was a film nerd in college. I'm feeing a sense of pride and humility and immense gratitude.
You're going to hear me say the name Ryan Coogler constantly on this phone call. To me, the best thing a producer can do is find a person with something to say, who has a story to tell and can tell it in a way that the world responds to. That's what Mr. Coogler has done for us."
Describing the group chat happening during the live-read nominations between Feige, Coogler, executive producer Nate Moore and Disney Chief Exec Bob Iger:
"It mainly manifested itself in numerous emojis. A lot of firework- and confetti-laden text messages flying fast and furious."
Feige apparently texted a video to composer Ludwig Goransson, nominated for his Black Panther score, featuring Coogler and Goransson dancing in the studio when the theme music was chosen, "where Ryan recorded himself dancing around with this unbelievable joy."
How about the reaction for the first African American woman to ever be nominated for production design, Hannah Beachler?
"She was hired in the room. I knew she'd never worked on a film this large before and had concerns about that, but we wanted to give her a chance to come in and pitch her vision for the movie. She came in and blew us away instantly. Journeys don't get better than that."
The 7 Oscar nominations for Black Panther include Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Costuming, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.
We're looking forward to seeing who takes home gold when the 91st Annual Academy Awards take place on February 24th 2019.
