Another video game adaptation that has been languishing in development hell for decades has taken another step toward emerging. The Metal Gear games have been around since the late 1980s and have been a massive part of video games ever since the medium has existed. However, it took until 2006 for the first whispers of a movie adaptation to finally start getting thrown around. However, the project fell apart and was confirmed to be on hold indefinitely by 2010.
In 2012, the rumor mill kicked up again, and this is when Sony Pictures stepped in for the first time. We learned that Jordan Vogt-Roberts was going to direct in 2015, and the film was still being actively worked on, with several drafts completed in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, we got our first confirmed casting with Oscar Isaac joining the cast; however, there hasn't been much since, and it's unclear whether Isaac is still involved. The last time he spoke about the film was back in 2022. What we know for sure now is that, after nearly a decade of sitting on the property in one way or another, Vogt-Roberts is no longer directing. Variety has confirmed that Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, who directed Final Destination: Bloodlines, have signed on to direct with Avi Arad and Ari Arad serving as producers.

"Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today. With projects across all the company's film labels, we are so happy to create a home for them, and proud to have them as part of the Sony family," said Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures' Motion Picture Group President. Lipovsky and Stein's company Wonderlab, which is in the process of recruiting executive leadership, will focus on "wildly fun, commercial, character-driven, genre-bending films."
"As long term fans of the game, we are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life," said Lipovsky and Stein, "we are honored to be partnering with the incredible executive team at Sony. While working with several Sony teams in the last year, we've been blown away by the level of creativity, thoughtfulness, and passion we felt in every conversation. We share the vision that Tom, Sanford, Peter, Louie, Kristine and Damien, Ashley and the whole Sony team have for creating theatrical event films that entertain the world."
Metal Gear Solid is another big video game adaptation that Sony is bringing to the big screen. A live-action Legend of Zelda movie is a Sony production, and it is set to be released in May 2027. They also successfully adapted Uncharted in 2022, another project that spent years in development hell.
