Pacific Rim Uprising's Director Talks Raleigh Becket's Fate

There are a lot of familiar faces missing from Pacific Rim Uprising and one of those faces is Raleigh Becket played by Charlie Hunnam. Hunnam was originally set to return for the sequel but scheduling conflicts meant they had to shift focus. Late last year John Boyega said that Raleigh was dead but it's not as clear in the movie. This isn't a spoiler since no one ever talks about it but director Steven S. DeKnight talked to IGN about what happened to Raleigh and why he wasn't there.

"What happened to Raleigh Becket, yes indeed," DeKnight said. "In a version of the movie, that was answered. I decided I really wanted to remove that because I thought it painted us into a bit of a corner. So the mystery of what happened to Raleigh Becket is something that I actually want fans to be asking. And it's my hope – unfortunately, Charlie Hunnam couldn't do this movie because of a scheduling conflict — but it's my hope to bring him back in a future installment, and actually answer that question on-screen."

So it's left purposely ambiguous about what happened to Raleigh. They decided that the best thing to do was leave it alone and see if maybe the character could make a return for another installment should they get one. That's an interesting way to go about explaining where the character is but what if that third movie doesn't happen? Are we ever going to find out what happened to this character? We'll just have to see.

Summary: Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.

Pacific Rim Uprising, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, stars John Boyega, Tian Jing, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman. It will be released March 23rd.
