Star Trek Threequel Rumours: Jon Chu Out, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Rupert Wyatt In

SSo here's another name seemingly plucked from Paramount's wish list of directors for the next Star Trek movie. This one bobbed up at two different outlets last night – Collider and Cinematallica.

According to both parties, the "frontrunner" for the gig is Rupert Wyatt, a Hollyoaks alum from Wales, for sure, but also the man behind The Escapist and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He's certainly talented, but doesn't he other, more interesting projects to pursue than a threequel?

Meanwhile, John Chu's reps have officially denied that he was a candidate for the job. They weren't doing this out of the blue – there was a rumour going around earlier on.

Personally, I have heard that either Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci or both might step up to direct the film, and while my source was sound, that was a long time ago – at least in Hollywood terms. I'm wondering if it was just a bit of studio spitballing – as Chu also appears to have been, at best, and as Wyatt very possibly still is.

Expect more news soon, though, as I'm sure Paramount will want this film in cinemas for 2016's 50th anniversary of the original series.
