Star Wars: The Strange Meaning Behind Greedo's "Maclunkey" Explained

Earlier this week, Bleeding Cool reported on the most recent edit to the controversial scene at the Mos Eisley Cantina between Han Solo and Greedo in Star Wars. Over the years the scene has been edited multiple times. Originally, Han shot first, killing Greedo before he could take a shot at Han. In subsequent edits, Greedo shoots first, or both shoot at the same time, with terrible CGI used to make Han dodge the shot with his head. In the most recent edit, which debuted on the Disney+ streaming service, both shoot at the same time again, but this time, Greedo shouts "MACLUNKEY" while firing, his final words.

Disney Has Chance to Fix Han/Greedo Scene in Star Wars for Disney+, Makes It Worse Instead

The addition of the mysterious line of dialog has baffled Star Wars fans, not only because it seems like yet another pointless edit to a scene that people are already irritated about, but also because "MACLUNKEY" is not accompanied by any subtitles to indicate what it means. In the days since the new version was released, Disney has denied culpability in the edit, blaming it instead on the final acts of George Lucas before selling Star Wars to Disney, and if we know George Lucas, that does sound like something he would do. But what about the deeper mystery, the meaning behind the mysterious word?

Bleeding Cool can EX-X-XCLUSIVELY reveal that we have discovered exactly what "MACLUNKEY" means and why Greedo said it. It turns out that Greedo isn't speaking Rodian, his native language, as we first suspected. Instead, Greedo is speaking in Huttese throughout the entire conversation. And through in-depth research, we have discovered that "MACLUNKEY" is a phrase which in Huttese translates roughly to "Release the Snyder Cut!"

The Snyder Cut, for those who have been living under a rock since a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, is a version of the 2016 film Justice League which restores the vision of original director Zack Snyder. Snyder had to leave Justice League before the film was finished due to a personal tragedy, so Warner Bros brought on alleged fake feminist Joss Whedon to finish the film. But though Whedon promised to stay true to Snyder's Vision, what he ultimately did was replace all of Snyder's badass Superman scenes with scenes where Cyborg says "booyah." As a result, Justice League flopped at the box office and DC Films president Jon Berg paid the ultimate price for failure.

CD Warner Bros' New HBO Max Streaming Service Succeed Without the Snyder Cut?

But in the wake of Justice League's box office failure, a movement of hardcore Zack Snyder fans rose up, calling themselves Snyderbronies, and demanding that Warner Bros release the cut of the film that Snyder had been working on before Whedon ruined it. That movement has only grown stronger as the years have passed, with everyone from Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia to superstar comic book artist Rob Liefeld to Aquaman star Jason Momoa joining the Snyderbronies' ranks.

And it makes sense that Greedo would also be a Snyderbrony and a supporter of the Snyder Cut's release. A hardened bounty hunter, Greedo knows, just like Zack Snyder, that "you're living in a f**king dream world" if you don't think superheroes kill. Han Solo, on the other hand, is a dude who doesn't even shoot first when a bounty hunter is trying to kill him, so he clearly would support Whedon's version of the film.

It's touching that Greedo would use his final words to advocate for the release of the Snyder Cut, and we should be grateful that he gave his life so that more people could be aware of the Snyder Cut's existence. What's important now is that we make sure that Greedo's sacrifice was not in vain and that now, more than ever, we fight to convince Warner Bros to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League.

Or, in the words of a dear, departed Snyderbrony: "MACLUNKEY!"
