Kevin Feige has copped to the fact that Doctor Strange is part of Marvel Studio's phase 3 plans, alongside Ant Man. Where exactly it would go in the release schedule is completely unknown as yet, though it wouldn't be crazy to think it could be as early as April 2016.
Well, I say early. It's currently April 2013. That's where the early comes into it.
So perhaps we should take any Doctor Strange casting rumours with a pinch of salt for now. Or, maybe, there are plans to introduce the character sooner. I can imagine a cameo in Thor, maybe. Perhaps even the SHIELD TV show, or the next Captain America movie, at a pinch.
Or perhaps the studio is going to flip the script and introduce a character in the second Avengers film rather than just keep pulling strings together.
In any case, CHUD are reporting that Justin Theroux is being considered, however casually, for the role. They say:
My trusted industry source tells me that Marvel is eyeballing someone that they already have a relationship with for the lead in a confirmed Phase Three projects: Dr. Strange. The name? Actor/screenwriter Justin Theroux. There's no word on whether or not he is the only name being looked at for the part of Stephen Strange, but I am told that there is a strong interest over at the House of Lee.
The house of Lee? Er… that's maybe not going to work. House of Feige. House of D'Esposito. House of Whedon sort-of-maybe-just-a-bit. But Lee?
Anyway, Theroux was one of the writers on Iron Man 2, and he has other salient experience too, after a fashion.
I've heard a lot of voices calling out for different actors to take the role of Strange, with Patrick Dempsey perhaps mentioned the most and Peter Dinklage perhaps mentioned the best. Theroux definitely sits somewhere closer to the Dinklage end of the scale, but I still think the perfect idea is waiting to land.
