There's going to be an awful lot of cameos in the new Muppets movie. Tonight, The Hollywood Reporter name Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt; previously, they named Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis and Jean-Claude Van Damme as having roles; for casting stories from before that point, I refer you to some of my previous coverage.
Judging from a picture posted on Facebook, Mickey Rooney will be appearing in the picture too. This appeared on the profile of Chris Aber, Rooney's stepson.
Small spoilers follow. You have been warned.
Note that THR say Jack Black is playing "a kidnap victim" whereas I had said he was playing himself; we're neither of us wrong – he's playing himself, but he gets kidnapped. And is shot at with cannonballs.
They also say that they have no idea who Emily Blunt is playing; according to the copy of the script I have seen, she's essentially reprising her role from The Devil Wears Prada. Don't expect all of the players in that sequence to reappear, however – there's some very deliberate, specific and Muppety-charming twists.
Pacific Coast News Online had a wave of on-set pictures showing lots and lots of Muppets mid-shoot. They appear to have been taken down now, but they were sent to me via e-mail and so here they are:
In case you couldn't guess, the image at the head of the post also belonged in that set.
Published a little longer ago was the following image:
That appeared in the Whittier Daily News. It seems like Whittier is standing in for the Smalltown USA location of the film's first few scenes, before the action relocates to (mainly) LA. It's the kind of town that has remained morally and aesthetically in the 1950s.
My dream is to get an interview with Kermit as this movie nears release. I've got so much to ask him. Cross your fingers for me.
