'Deadly Class' Cancelled: No Second Season at SYFY

Deadly Class, the highly original, incredibly thrilling tale of teenage assassins in the '80s, has been cancelled, and will not see a second season on SYFY.

It's been pretty touch and go, with SYFY holding back on renewing the series. Although the show has a very loyal fan base, most of the 1 million plus views happen after the show airs, which means the all-important advertisers aren't as interested in investing in the show.

The cancellation announcement was made on Tuesday, June 4th, with SYFY also deciding to pass on a third season for the delightfully twisted burned out detective and imaginary cartoon horse series, Happy!

Based off of the long-running series of comic books from Rick Remender and Wes Craig, Deadly Class features a winning ensemble cast lead by Benedict Wong, with exceptional performances from Benjamin Wadsworth, Liam James, Luke Tennie, Lana Condor, María Gabriela de Faría, and Taylor Hickson.

Deadly Class has some of the smartest writing on television, all under the watchful eye of Remender, one of the co-creators of the comic book that the show is based on. The dialogue is wickedly funny at times, poignant at others, and none of it feels forced or cliche.

The ensemble cast has been extraordinary as well, with fantastic cameos from Henry Rollins and French Stewart, who steals an entire episode with his turn as serial-killer-turned-teacher, Scorpio Slasher.

Deadly Class takes place in San Francisco during 1987, with the waning years of the Reagan administration seeing a lot of federal aid to mental health programs cut. There is a sense of real decay at play throughout the show, as if to show the viewers that the pop-candy veneer of new-wave glam culture was a flimsy lens best not dwelled upon.

The show focuses on the student body of Kings Dominion, a boarding school that teaches the next generation of assassins how to ply their trade. The students are split by Legacies; long family lines of killers and alumni of the school, and Rats; riff-raff and street kids recruited by Master Lin to fill the ranks. There are divisions between the Legacy students, as the Dixie Mob won't mingle with the Cartel kids, but all of the Legacies prey on the rats.

The school is led by Master Lin (Wong), under the watchful eye of the mysterious Guild. The Guild just happens to be directed by Lin's sister, Madam Gao (Olivia Cheng). The rules of Kings Dominion are strictly enforced by roving squads of hooded monks, and the faculty is made up of some of the nastiest killers on the planet.

Deadly Class also features an incredible '80s soundtrack, which manages to be a character in its own right!

While a second season of the show will not happen on SYFY, there is talk that Sony Pictures will be shopping the series to other outlets hoping to find a home for the series.

Deadly Class was not entirely owned by SYFY, which meant that the network did not entirely own redistribution rights for the series. The network decided to pass on renewing The Expanse last year for the same reason, which allowed Amazon to pick up the series. Hopefully, Deadly Class will have a similar fate.
