Actor Jeff Kober recently revealed a story about his time on the FOX show 24, when he became the third actor to take on a role after two others failed to hold their own. Kober chatted with The AV Club about a number of subjects, including his most recent role on The Pitt and his Daytime Emmy-award-winning performance on General Hospital. Going over many of his previous roles, they came to his brief appearance on Season 5 of 24, in which he played Conrad Haas, an assassin who tried to take out several characters and frame Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) for them, only to be killed by Jack himself. According to Kober, he got the role after two unnamed actors failed to clear the bar for the role he was acting alongside Sutherland.

Jeff Kober Steps Into 24 After Two Actors Couldn't Hang With Kiefer

In the interview, Kober explains, "I got called in to go do this role—I'm going to assassinate the president—and there were these scenes that we were only shooting from one angle, and I was, like, 'What's going on?" And they said, "Well, we already shot everything from behind your character and all the long shots of your character, but…those actors didn't work out." [Laughs.] "So we're just gonna do your close-ups and your dialogue with you." So I said, "Okay!" But people kept coming up to me or calling me to say, "Are you okay? Is everything alright?" "Yeah, why?" And what they were all worried about was that, apparently, they were afraid that I wouldn't be able to hang in with Kiefer [Sutherland]. Because that's what happened with these other actors, apparently: They were intimidated by him. And I'd learned how to just work with whoever you work with."

According to Kober, he nailed the role, and after filming was done, Sutherland walked away, broke character when they were done filming, shook his hand and said, "Thanks so much for coming in! Great job!" A small but fun story about how sometimes a role will land in your lap when you least expect it.
