Obi-Wan: Ewan McGregor Nudges Disney to Finish His Star Wars Story

Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor reminds Disney there's tons of meat left on the bone, with 10 years' worth of story before A New Hope.

When Ewan McGregor came back to play the titular Obi-Wan Kenobi after 17 years away from the character in the Disney+ series, the star and fans alike were excited to see the hero come back to the screen again. What we saw was a broken Jedi long out of practice, suppressing his powers to fly under the radar of the Galactic Empire while his former pupil, Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen), the former Anakin Skywalker, sought to hunt him. While fans got another adventure seeing their favorite prequel characters back on screen, there's still a decade's worth of story McGregor hopes to expand on as Disney remains noncommittal on the series' future with no activity since 2022, not even an official cancellation. Sitting opposite his The End of Oak Street co-star Anne Hathaway (The Odyssey) for Esquire for their Inquiring Minds segment as actors ask each other industry and personal questions related to their projects, the A Gentleman from Moscow star, who reprised his role in the animated Maul – Shadow Lord, was asked mostly about his work as Obi-Wan and the Joby Harold-created miniseries, and the loose ends he nudged Disney to fill.

When Hathaway asked what character she would play, McGregor suggested she could play (original Leia actress) Carrie Fisher's secret sister, adding the late actress was "one of my most favorite people in the world." Hathaway thought, "So, Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) couldn't have had another baby. Am I Anakin's evil daughter? Not with Amidala, so I'm Luke and Leia's half-sister." If Anakin had some secret affair, it might create ripples among an already divided fanbase. Perhaps he could have had a fling before reconnecting with Padme during the events of 2002's Attack of the Clones, since no one has really explained how Anakin could have another child in Vader form.

Advancing on the hypothetical, Hathaway continued, "I kind of want to join you on your quest for Yoda in this future quest years" before triggering McGregor to pitch a new Obi-Wan season, "Now that you've said that, that might help us get it down. You know, because [both laugh] at this point, nothing's really moving on that front, so…" With Hathaway's final Star Wars-related question, she asked, "What part of Obi-Wan's story feels unfinished to you?"

McGregor responded, "Well, everything between the end of the TV series that we did and Alec Guinness. So, there are 10 years of something happening to Obi-Wan where…at the end of the series, I leave Luke where he is on Tatooine and Princess Leia is safe, and I go off into the desert on my camel, which was not a camel but some…a 'Eopie' I think they're called. I was on a real camel, and I really fell from my real camel. I almost looked into getting a camel. They're quite difficult to get."

During season one, Obi-Wan found renewed purpose after an old friend, Sen. Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) sought him out to rescue his adopted daughter, Princess Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair), as bandits were looking to keep her hostage. As he reluctantly takes action, he's also tasked with looking after Leia's twin brother, Luke (Grant Feely), who's under the watch of his uncle Owen (Joel Edgerton) and aunt Beru (Bonnie Piesse), while doing everything he can to keep the truth from Vader about his twin children. As season one saw Obi-Wan rediscovering his Jedi powers, reuniting Leia with her family at Alderaan, ensuring Luke's safety, and, at least, putting his former Padawan at bay as his master, Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) tells him to focus his efforts elsewhere in his cause to crush the Rebellion.
