"Descendants" Star Cameron Boyce Passes Away, Age 20

Fans of the Disney Channel's Descendants franchise and the actor were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of film and television star Cameron Boyce on Sunday. Boyce's death was caused by a seizure, which resulted from "an ongoing medical condition" the 20-year-old actor was being treated for. A spokesperson for Boyce's family released the following statement to ABC News:

"It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron. He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated.

The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him.

We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother."

Though widely known for his portrayal of Carlos in Disney's Descendants franchise (with Descendants 3 set to premiere in August), Boyce's breakout role came as co-lead Luke Ross for four seasons of Disney Channel's Jessie. Professionally, Boyce was beginning to see his star rise: upcoming projects included a series regular role in HBO's Mrs. Fletcher, with Kathryn Hahn; American Satan television spinoff Paradise City; and a starring role in director William Coakley's indie film Runt.

In a May 2019 interview with Haute Living, Boyce opened up about how he confronts negativity as he pursues his goals:

"Speaking with a lot of artists, one of the things all of us have in common is we're all our own biggest critics. I find comfort in that. I know that everyone else sees my work in a light differently than how I see it. They're not picking apart every little habit and twitch and imperfection nearly as thoroughly as I am. So often times naysayers aren't as hard on me as myself. It also helps when you can decipher a naysayer and a hater. A hater should always be white noise."
