Death Comes To Hellboy: The Fury #3 (SPOILERS)
There has been a lot of death in comics of late. Marvel even promised a death every quarter at one point. From Captain America to Batman to Ultimate Spider-Man to Aquaman to Bucky to… well, you get the idea. Usually they are played out as last-page-of-the-issue, shock horror, cliffhanger ending, albeit one teased for days in the press sucking any surprise out of the story.
It's no surprise that Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo play things differently.
Oh sure the death of Hellboy himself is spectacular, a series of events weakening him until he finally has his heart ripped from his chest.
But before that, even as the battle commences, there is poetry. And this tragic turn fits that mood perfectly.
Yes, like that. In a traditional book, his body's fall to the ground would have been the end of the story. But this is Hellboy and we still have a way to go. First there is the loss of those left behind. Then there is a journey that something resembling Hellboy still has to go in in an Arthurian/Alice In Wonderland world before he gets to… well, as we've seen, Hell.
And then there's the world Hellboy has left behind after the battle, or more specifially the England, the London. Forget about Bleeding Cool spoiling Hellboy, it looks like reality has done quite a good job of it as well.
